Cars 2 review

Cars 2 is the sequel to 2006's Cars, but don't expect it to be anything like the original. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is racing in a new competition known as the World Grand Prix. The competition has been organized by a car named Axlerod (Miles Izzard) who is testing his new alternative fuel, Allinol. But a group of cars who are a part of the Big Oil industry, led by Professor Z attempt to sabotage the World Grand Prix.

So, McQueen and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) head to Japan for the first race of the World Grand Prix. The race takes place in three countries: Japan, Italy, and England. McQueen and Francesco (John Turturro) are the lead competitors in the race. Then after the first race in Japan, Mater is mistaken for an American spy by British spies Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and Holly Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer).

Cars 2 is different from anything else Pixar has ever done before. This film is the first by Pixar to have more action and less story. Mater is now the main character and he is pretty funny. The film's humor is funnier than you would expect from an animated film, with more jokes that teens and adults will find funny. Francesco is hilarious and carries a lot of the racing scenes. The animation is amazing and colorful like last year's Toy Story 3. But the thing that separates the animation in Cars 2 from the animation in Toy Story 3 is that Cars 2 takes place in Japan and Italy and the colors seem to pop off the screen. Also, I did not see the film in 3-D, but I have heard that it makes it dark and fuzzy. I would not recommend seeing it in 3-D.

If you like spy films and action you will love Cars 2. But if you prefer Pixar's more story-oriented films like Finding Nemo or Ratatouille, you will think of Cars 2 as the worst film Pixar has ever made. Personally, I liked it a lot and I think that it is the best animated film of the year.

THE FINAL GRADE:  B+                                          (7.7/10)
